The opportunity
Reporting to the VP, Business Transformation, we are hiring a Senior Data Architect to serve as the architectural authority and hands-on delivery leader for the WELL Intelligence Platform. In this role, you will define the target-state data architecture, make critical architectural decisions, and set enforceable standards for modelling, ingestion, governance, and observability. You will review and approve designs, ensure platform quality, and drive implementation outcomes with security, compliance, and scalability at the forefront.
You will lead engineers directly and operate through cross-functional squads when needed, influencing both technical execution and platform strategy. While the current enterprise standard is Snowflake, you will have the latitude to evaluate alternative components or technology stacks when there is a clear long-term strategic advantage, whether in cost efficiency, scalability, developer velocity, governance, interoperability, or AI enablement.
This is an opportunity to define the blueprint for a modern, enterprise-scale data platform that guides both the engineering team and cross-functional partners in delivering high-quality, governed, and future-ready solutions.
This is an existing opportunity, working remotely within Canada.
Who you are
As a systems-level thinker and architectural authority who balances technical depth with business alignment, you are looking for the challenges and rewards of stepping up to a Senior Data Architect role at a multi-billion-dollar, purpose-driven company. You excel at designing scalable, governed, and resilient platforms while remaining pragmatic and delivery-focused. You bring clarity to complexity, define guardrails without slowing innovation, and elevate engineering maturity wherever you work.
Above all else, you are a highly technical and collaborative architect who wants to stay deeply involved with building solutions.
What’s in it for you
Purpose and impact. You will shape the architecture that powers the WELL Intelligence Platform and its enterprise data products, directly impacting analytics, automation, AI readiness, and business decision-making across the organization. Your work will enable trusted, governed, and high-quality data at scale, preparing it for safe integration with advanced AI tools.
Technical influence. You will define architecture principles, data modelling standards, semantic layer patterns, governance frameworks, and operational guardrails that set the tone for the entire data platform. You will design AI-ready data pipelines, embedding workflows, vector storage patterns, metadata tagging, and feature engineering structures to enable machine learning without building models yourself. Your decisions will guide ingestion patterns, transformation frameworks, security design, and platform observability.
Ownership. You will own both the strategic and tactical execution of platform architecture, from making enforceable design decisions and reviewing implementations, to mentoring engineers and ensuring delivery aligns with platform standards. You will have the authority to enforce best practices, optimize for cost and performance, and ensure platform resilience.
Career development. WELL has grown significantly and continues to scale as demand for our solutions increases, resulting in financial success and a proven acquisition strategy. You will gain experience balancing strategic architecture decisions with practical delivery constraints in a dynamic, fast-growing environment. As the platform matures, you will expand your influence across enterprise architecture, AI strategy, and multi-entity data governance, positioning yourself for broader opportunities in technology leadership.
You will:
- Own architectural authority and standards. You will own the end-to-end architecture of the WELL Intelligence Platform and other strategic data products, defining architecture principles, reference patterns, and guardrails across batch and streaming ingestion, data modelling, security, governance, and observability. You will maintain Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), lead formal architecture reviews, and provide final technical approval on critical platform designs, stopping or redirecting implementations that violate standards or compromise long-term scalability, compliance, or AI readiness.
- Lead engineering direction and delivery. You will provide technical leadership to data and platform engineers, including direction-setting, planning, prioritization, mentoring, and performance feedback as applicable. You will drive delivery through cross-functional squads, aligning Cloud, Security, Applications, and BI/Analytics teams around shared outcomes. You will own technical execution plans, sequencing, and risk management across platform build phases. You will establish engineering ways of working, including CI/CD standards, code quality practices, testing strategies, release management, and operational readiness criteria.
- Design and govern the data model and semantic layer. You will design and govern conceptual, logical, and physical data models aligned to enterprise objectives. You will define and maintain conformed dimensions, canonical entities, and enterprise KPI definitions to ensure consistency across subsidiaries. You will establish semantic layer patterns and ownership models that preserve reporting integrity and prevent metric drift across business units.
- Execute and guide platform implementation. You will design and guide ingestion patterns, including CDC, incremental processing, and event-driven architectures where appropriate. You will define and build reusable pipeline frameworks, orchestration patterns, embedding workflows, vector storage solutions, and data contract approaches that enable scale and autonomy. You will drive performance and cost optimization strategies, including partitioning, clustering, workload management, and right-sizing. You will establish platform observability standards, including lineage, monitoring, alerting, SLOs/SLAs, and incident runbooks.
- Embed governance, security, and privacy by design. You will architect privacy and security controls directly into platform patterns, including least-privilege access, encryption standards, auditability, and environment segregation. You will define patterns for row- and column-level security, masking and tokenization, secure data sharing, and policy-as-code implementation. You will ensure platform designs meet compliance expectations in sensitive data environments, including PHI and PII handling.
- Enable AI and automation readiness. You will ensure curated datasets are AI-ready, traceable, reproducible, high-quality, and governed. You will define secure retrieval patterns and controlled access mechanisms, collaborate with AI delivery teams, and implement feature engineering pipelines to enable ML and automation workflows without weakening governance, auditability, or data integrity.
- Partner with stakeholders strategically. You will translate business objectives into a pragmatic backlog of data products and platform capabilities. You will align subsidiaries on shared standards while accommodating local system variance and maturity differences. You will clearly communicate architectural trade-offs across cost, speed, quality, and risk to executive and technical stakeholders.
You bring:
- The experience. You have deep expertise in data architecture and data or platform engineering, with a proven track record of architecting and delivering modern cloud data platforms end-to-end. You have demonstrated leadership experience, either through direct management of engineers or by leading cross-functional delivery squads accountable for complex platform initiatives.
- The platform and data architecture depth. You bring strong expertise with Snowflake or an equivalent modern warehouse or lakehouse platform and understand data platform best practices at scale. You possess deep data modelling expertise, including dimensional modelling, strong conceptual and logical design, and a pragmatic approach to normalization trade-offs. You have strong orchestration and transformation experience (e.g., ADF, Airflow, Dagster, dbt or equivalent), advanced SQL capability, and working proficiency in Python. You are comfortable with APIs, eventing patterns, integration design, and secure connectivity across SaaS and internal enterprise systems. You understand DevOps collaboration patterns, including Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure-as-Code practices such as Terraform.
- The AI integration knowledge. You have hands-on experience enabling AI/ML workflows on modern data platforms. You design and implement AI-ready datasets with vector storage, embedding pipelines, metadata tagging, and feature engineering pipelines. You ensure data is traceable, reproducible, and governed for safe AI consumption. You integrate monitoring and observability patterns into ML pipelines, collaborate with AI delivery teams, and operationalize secure retrieval and controlled-access mechanisms without compromising governance, compliance, or platform scalability.
- The governance and operational maturity. You have experience designing and implementing scalable data governance capabilities, including cataloging, lineage, automated data quality testing, and stewardship workflows. You possess strong security and privacy fundamentals appropriate for sensitive data environments and understand how to operationalize compliance requirements without over-engineering solutions.
- The leadership skills. You have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and can translate complex technical concepts for a non-technical audience. You have a proven ability to build and foster collaborative relationships at all levels and maintain credibility with senior leadership. You lead by example and can guide the work of data engineers.
