The opportunity

We are looking for a Data Engineer for the WELL Intelligence Platform. In this hands-on role, you will design, build, and operate reliable, secure, and scalable data pipelines and data products that power analytics, automation, and AI. This is a Snowflake-heavy position suited for a builder who can implement complex solutions, troubleshoot issues end-to-end, and continuously improve platform engineering quality.

You will work under the architectural direction of the Senior Data Architect while contributing to design discussions, proposing implementation approaches, and delivering high-quality code that meets platform standards for governance, security, performance, and observability.

This is an opportunity to influence the foundation of a modern Data & AI platform, set standards for data quality and governance, and make a measurable impact across analytics, automation, and AI initiatives.

This is an existing, fully remote role based anywhere in Canada.

Who you are

You are a builder of modern data systems who thrives at the intersection of engineering rigour and analytical enablement. You enjoy designing reliable pipelines, modelling clean datasets, and turning raw inputs into trusted, production-grade data products. You are comfortable operating in ambiguity, bringing structure to evolving requirements, and balancing speed with quality. You take pride in writing maintainable code, optimizing performance, and embedding governance into everything you build, and laying the foundation for AI tomorrow.

What's in it for you

Purpose and impact. You will build the pipelines and data products that power analytics, automation, and AI across the WELL Intelligence Platform. Your work will directly influence decision-making, operational efficiency, and AI enablement, giving you the satisfaction of seeing tangible outcomes from your engineering efforts.

Technical influence. You will shape ingestion patterns, transformation frameworks, modelling standards, and observability practices within a modern Snowflake-based architecture. You will have the opportunity to propose design approaches, optimize performance and cost, and establish governance standards that set the tone for the platform.

Ownership. From design and build to operational reliability, you will own the end-to-end delivery of pipelines and data products. You will troubleshoot complex issues, implement robust solutions, and ensure that your contributions meet platform standards for security, governance, and quality for healthcare technology.

Exposure and breadth. You will gain deep hands-on experience with Snowflake, Python, orchestration frameworks, and modern cloud data engineering practices, while collaborating closely with senior architects and cross-functional teams. You will build expertise in both operational reliability and continuous platform evolution.

Career development. WELL has grown significantly and continues to scale as demand for our solutions increases, resulting in financial success and a proven acquisition strategy. As the platform scales, you will expand your scope into architecture, advanced optimization, streaming/event-driven design, or AI enablement initiatives, positioning yourself as a senior technical contributor or future platform lead.

You will:

  • Build data pipelines and products. You will design and implement robust batch and incremental ingestion pipelines, incorporating CDC, backfill, and late-arriving data handling patterns. You will implement event-driven ingestion architectures where required, ensuring reliability, ordering and deduplication controls, and replay strategies. You will build curated, production-grade datasets and data products that are well-modeled, tested, documented, and optimized for analytics and downstream consumption. You will develop reusable ingestion frameworks and components to accelerate onboarding of new data sources and standardize delivery patterns.
  • Transform, model, and serve data. You will implement complex transformation logic using advanced SQL and appropriate tooling (e.g., dbt or equivalent). You will contribute to dimensional models and conformed entities under the guidance of the Senior Data Architect, applying sound modeling principles and normalization trade-offs. You will support semantic layer artifacts and standardized KPI definitions through consistent, governed data structures that enable trusted analytics and reporting.
  • Engineer for quality and scale. You will build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data workloads, including automated testing, validation, and promotion across environments. You will write production-grade Python and SQL code with disciplined version control, peer code review practices, and automated test coverage. You will implement data quality checks, reconciliation controls, and ensure pipeline idempotency, recoverability, and performance optimization within Snowflake and associated compute platforms.
  • Ensure observability and operational reliability. You will instrument pipelines with logging, monitoring, alerting, and meaningful operational metrics. You will troubleshoot failures across ingestion layers, orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, ADF, Dagster), warehouse compute, distributed processing engines, and upstream dependencies. You will participate in on-call rotations or incident response as defined, contributing to runbooks, root cause analysis, and post-incident continuous improvement.
  • Embed security and governance by design. You will implement least-privilege access controls, secure connectivity patterns, and row/column-level security where required. You will apply privacy and protection controls for sensitive data (PII/PHI), including masking and tokenization strategies. You will contribute metadata for cataloging and lineage and ensure adherence to established data governance and compliance standards.
  • Collaborate and continuously improve. You will work cross-functionally with Cloud Engineering, Security, Application teams, and BI/Analytics stakeholders to deliver measurable outcomes. You will validate requirements, definitions, and acceptance criteria with business partners and propose optimizations that improve cost efficiency, performance, scalability, and delivery velocity across the data platform.

You bring:

  • The experience. You have in-depth engineering experience delivering production-grade data pipelines and data products in cloud environments (Azure and/or AWS). You have a proven track record of building reliable, scalable solutions on modern cloud data platforms and operating them in production.
  • The data engineering expertise. You bring advanced SQL skills, including complex query design and performance tuning, and strong proficiency in Python for data engineering workloads. You have deep, hands-on experience with Snowflake, including data modelling, workload management, and performance and cost optimization, or equivalent experience with a modern cloud data warehouse. You understand dimensional modelling principles, conformed entities, and normalization trade-offs. You have experience designing robust pipelines, including incremental processing, CDC, backfills, idempotency, and handling late-arriving data. You are familiar with transformation frameworks such as dbt or equivalent. You understand data governance concepts, including lineage, cataloging, quality management, and stewardship.
  • The platform and cloud engineering capability. You have experience working within Azure and/or AWS cloud ecosystems and understand modern cloud-native data architecture patterns. You have hands-on experience with orchestration frameworks such as Airflow, ADF, or Dagster, and understand distributed compute paradigms, including Spark and Databricks, and when to leverage them. You have exposure to eventing and streaming technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, or Event Hubs, and understand the operational realities of hybrid batch-and-event-driven architectures.
  • Operational reliability and security. You are proficient with Git, structured code reviews, automated testing strategies, and CI/CD pipelines. You are familiar with Infrastructure-as-Code principles and can collaborate effectively with Cloud Engineering teams. You implement observability best practices, including logging, monitoring, alerting, and operational dashboards to support production reliability. You have experience implementing row- and column-level security, masking, tokenization, and secure data sharing patterns.
  • AI and advanced analytics enablement. You have exposure to AI-enabling use cases, including building AI-ready datasets, feature engineering patterns, and controlled access mechanisms for advanced analytics. While this is not a data science role, your work ensures that datasets are prepared and governed for safe AI integration.
  • The interpersonal skills. You have professional communication skills and can build collaborative relationships within and across teams. You are open to feedback and sharing knowledge. You are driven, curious, and solution-oriented.
