The opportunity
Reporting to the Director of Cloud Engineering, we are hiring a Senior Cloud Engineer to design, build, and operate the cloud foundations and shared services that enable the WELL Intelligence Platform. This is a highly hands-on role responsible for implementing secure, scalable, and cost-effective cloud capabilities for data ingestion, transformation, governance, and consumption.
You will work very closely with the Senior Data Architect and Data Engineers to deliver cloud services that meet rigorous standards for reliability, performance, security, and observability. While your day-to-day reporting is to the Cloud Engineering team, you will operate under dotted-line guidance from the CDAIO, contributing directly to the platform’s architecture, operational controls, and delivery milestones.
This is an opportunity to shape the backbone of a modern enterprise cloud platform, directly influencing how the organization securely ingests, processes, and leverages data at scale.
This is an existing, fully remote role based anywhere in Canada.
Who you are
You are a cloud-first infrastructure engineer who designs for scale, security, and resilience from day one, and you are ready for the challenges and ownership of a senior role.
You think in systems: landing zones, connectivity patterns, identity models, guardrails, and you build foundations that enable others to move quickly without compromising governance. You are pragmatic, automation-driven, and disciplined in applying Infrastructure-as-Code and security-by-design principles. You are comfortable operating in complex, regulated environments and translating architectural intent into secure, production-ready cloud implementations.
What’s in it for you
Purpose and impact. You will enable the cloud foundation that powers the WELL Intelligence Platform, providing the secure, reliable, and scalable infrastructure that drives analytics, automation, and AI. Your work will have a direct, measurable impact on platform performance, availability, and operational excellence.
Technical influence. You will define and implement cloud architecture patterns, networking and identity/security models, CI/CD pipelines, and observability practices that set standards for the platform. You will have the chance to influence the design and operational practices used across the organization’s cloud services.
Ownership. You will own cloud delivery end-to-end — from foundational design and implementation to ongoing reliability, cost optimization, and operational improvement. You will troubleshoot complex issues, enforce best practices, and ensure platform standards for security, governance, and performance are met.
Exposure and breadth. You will gain hands-on experience across modern cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS), networking, security, IaC, CI/CD, observability tooling, and cloud-native patterns. You will collaborate closely with data engineers, architects, and platform teams, developing expertise in both operational reliability and ongoing cloud platform evolution.
Career development. WELL has grown significantly and continues to scale as demand for our solutions increases, resulting in financial success and a proven acquisition strategy. As the cloud footprint grows, you can expand into senior platform architecture, security engineering leadership, or enterprise cloud strategy roles.
You will:
- Build cloud foundations for the Data & AI platform. You will evolve cloud landing zones, subscription and account structures, network segmentation, and environment strategies (dev/test/prod) aligned to platform needs. You will establish standardized, secure connectivity patterns for SaaS and on-premises integrations, including routing, DNS, and firewall policy design. You will implement high-availability, backup, disaster-recovery, and recovery-testing capabilities to ensure platform resilience and operational continuity.
- Design secure connectivity and network architecture. You will design and implement cloud networking architectures that enable secure, scalable data movement and service communication. You will establish secure service-to-service connectivity patterns for platform components, including private connectivity models (e.g., PrivateLink or equivalent). You will implement and operate advanced network security controls (e.g., NGFW, WAF, where appropriate) while embedding zero-trust principles into platform design.
- Implement identity and platform security controls. You will design and implement IAM/RBAC patterns across platform services, including least-privilege access models, break-glass controls, and privileged access workflows. You will build and operate secrets management solutions (e.g., Key Vault and Secrets Manager patterns), certificate lifecycle management, and secure key-handling processes. You will partner with the Security and GRC teams to implement audit-ready controls, centralized logging, and evidence-capture mechanisms, leveraging policy-as-code wherever possible.
- Enable Infrastructure-as-Code and automated delivery. You will own and contribute to reusable Terraform modules that enable consistent, repeatable platform provisioning. You will design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and platform components, promoting automated testing and controlled promotion across environments. You will develop and maintain “golden path” templates that accelerate delivery while ensuring compliance, governance, and architectural consistency.
- Drive observability, reliability, and operations. You will implement centralized logging, metrics, alerting, and dashboards to support platform visibility and performance monitoring. You will partner with platform teams to define SLOs/SLAs, operational readiness criteria, and incident runbooks. You will provide 24x7 support for incidents impacting infrastructure and operations-owned services and lead or contribute to root cause analysis and remediation planning.
- Optimize cost, performance, and lifecycle management. You will continuously optimize cloud resource utilization through right-sizing, tagging standards, budget controls, and proactive capacity planning. You will manage lifecycle support for infrastructure components, including patching, upgrades, and structured deprecation planning to maintain platform currency and security.
- Lead cross-functional cloud delivery. You will work across engineering teams to translate platform requirements into secure, scalable cloud implementations. You will collaborate with SREs, Developers, Vendors, and Service Providers to deliver milestones on time and within standards. You will contribute to architectural reviews and ensure alignment between cloud implementation decisions and overall platform design.
You bring:
- The experience. You have deep experience in infrastructure engineering and operations across cloud and hybrid environments, and expertise with a major cloud provider (Azure or AWS). You have experience with Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform to provision and manage production environments.
- The cloud and network engineering expertise. You have strong cloud networking expertise, including VPC/VNet architecture, hybrid connectivity (VPN/ExpressRoute/Direct Connect), routing, DNS, and network segmentation. Experience with Palo Alto NextGen Firewalls is considered an asset. You understand secure service connectivity patterns and modern cloud-native networking architectures that support data and AI platforms.
- The security and platform controls capability. You possess strong security fundamentals, including IAM/RBAC design, encryption standards, key management, secure connectivity models, and the implementation of audit controls. You have experience building and operating secrets management solutions and enforcing least-privilege access patterns. You are comfortable implementing monitoring, logging, and compliance-aligned controls that support frameworks such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, or similar standards.
- The automation and delivery discipline. You are proficient with Git-based workflows, CI/CD pipeline implementation, and infrastructure automation. You bring scripting capability (Python, PowerShell, Bash) to support operational efficiency and repeatability. You have experience implementing observability tooling (e.g., Azure Monitor, CloudWatch, Prometheus, or equivalent) and understand container and orchestration concepts, with exposure to Kubernetes considered an advantage.
- The interpersonal skills. You have professional communication skills and can build collaborative relationships within and across teams. You are open to feedback and sharing knowledge. You are driven, curious, and solution-oriented. You have strong documentation and communication skills and can clearly articulate architectural trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You bring a pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset with a strong bias toward automation, standardization, and continuous improvement.
